OBJECTIVE
Compose a non-literal visual and typographic interpretive sequence that derives content from a haiku poem. Arrange content in a sequence of eight images, utilizing √2 rectangles as the shape for each image. Demonstrate mastery of developing dynamic visual images that differ from one another yet share cohesive qualities.
SKETCHES

Sketches explored potential concepts of visual haiku interpretations. "The Butterfly" was interpreted to have an ethereal feel that views nature through a reverent lens. The poem could be interpreted as a metaphor for life passing by quickly, as hinted in the lines, "moments flutter then depart / time's delicate dance." Initial sketches experiment with wind blowing through the spreads, symbolizing the passing of time. Later, the idea of a butterfly's flight path was drafted, symbolizing the path one takes through a fleeting life. A final concept that developed in the sketching stage was of a thick, directional, curved line that thins out throughout the spreads, symbolizing the deterioration that comes with time and aging.
DIGITAL ITERATIONS

Digital iterations were created to carry out concepts developed in the sketching stage. After evaluating these iterations, the butterfly's flight path as a symbol of the passage of a lifespan was the selected conceptual direction. Non-literal imagery of various parts of a butterfly would be the accompanying photographic elements of the project, as explored in the final haiku iteration.
TYPOGRAPHY EXPLORATION

Typography was intended to communicate the fragility and gentleness that the haiku conveys in its metaphor for life. Various typefaces, from serif to sans serif to handwritten, were explored. Ultimately, a handwritten typeface was chosen. The soft, light, humanistic qualities of this typeface show a visual interpretation of the existential message communicated through vivid poetry.
